Why is it some parts of the year crawl while others fly by? It seems like we were just making the most of the end-of-summer concerts and fall festivals when the talk made a sharp turn toward the holidays. Everywhere you look from highway billboards to store displays there are impending signs of the holidays. While it still might be too early for hearing never-ending loops of holiday tunes on the overhead speakers, it’s not too early to start thinking about holiday plans for Thanksgiving and beyond.

A Kansas City Tradition

One of the most memorable things about being in Kansas City for the winter holidays is the bridge between Thanksgiving and the Christmas holidays that kicks off with the KCP&L Plaza Lighting Ceremony. Now in its 87th year, the Plaza Lighting event is the area’s official beginning of the holiday season. This year, 2016 Olympic gold and bronze medal winner and KC native Jack Sock will do the honors of flipping the switch, lighting the 80 miles of lights outlining the Country Club Plaza.

Planning for the Lights

Plan to get there early to grab a spot before the festivities begin on the main stage at Nichols Road and Pennsylvania by Brio Tuscan Grille. The event kicks off at with pre-show performances from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., following by the lighting at 6:50 p.m. and a post-ceremony concert from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Be sure to also leave time for a warm drink and some window-shopping while you’re there.
