It’s not too early to start talking about the holiday season. Really, it isn’t. Let’s face it, once the coffee shops start selling pumpkin-spiced lattes, and eggnog can be found in the dairy section of the grocery store, we all know that the holiday season is beginning. So, let’s embrace it!
The holiday season in Kansas City is a magical time of year. There’s a crispness in the air that whispers promises of frosted windowpanes and snowflakes that swirl in the wind. The warm smell of cinnamon-tinged apple cider delights the senses. And, inside the retail shops, gift items simply beg to be picked up and wrapped in colorful paper and tied with a bow.
It’s unfortunate that some of the best aspects of the holiday season in Kansas City are fleeting. The Plaza Lights are a massive lighting display that accentuates the exterior of nearly every building in the Country Club Plaza shopping district. But, they’re only available to see from Thanksgiving to mid-January. The Mayor’s Christmas Tree (which represents the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund for the less fortunate) is a perfectly-shaped Douglas Fir that stands beautifully lit at Crown Center Square. The tree is taken down just after Christmas. Holiday lighting displays are abundant in the Greater Kansas City Area. You can drive down almost any street and see a wonderfully-creative lighting display. Most are taken down in January, but a few holiday holdouts keep them up until late in February. Holiday ice skating to festive music can be enjoyed at Crown Center – the city’s only public outdoor ice skating rink. And, although you can skate nearly year-round at Crown Center, the best time to go is during the holiday season (November through January). Holiday gift shopping on the Country Club Plaza is a holiday tradition in Kansas City. With so many shops, boutiques, and department stores in a 15-block radius, you know you’ll be able to find something for everyone on your list before the sales are over in January! Beautiful holiday-themed window displays are often on view at the Kansas City Power & Light District. Created by local artists, these festive storefronts are only on display during the holiday season. Christmas in the Park at Longview Lake is one of the top holiday attractions around the Kansas City Area. The driving tour of the park features hundreds of animated figures and 300,000 holiday lights, but the spectacle only runs from the end of November to the end of December.
