Picture this: you’re a bride or groom on your wedding day and you’re expecting perfect weather for your outdoor nuptials, but when you check the weather, there’s rain and storms forecasted, putting a literal damper on your wedding day plans. Though they say it’s good luck to have rain on your wedding day, it can leave the bride and groom feeling stressed and having to change plans at the last minute when they should be enjoying the day, not worrying about the weather.

Unfortunately, when you plan an outdoor wedding months and years in advance, there’s no way to predict the weather. Our weather in Missouri and Kansas is one of the most unpredictable, often changing patterns at the last minute and is infamous for doing the complete opposite of what is forecasted.

To ensure you have the wedding of your dreams, we’re sharing how you can avoid disasters at your outdoor wedding. Keep the following tips in mind if you’re currently planning yours!

Have a backup plan

Planning a beautiful, summer evening ceremony by a lake or a fall afternoon ceremony in a park? When you plan your outdoor ceremony in advance, you’re really gambling with the weather; it could be hot and sunny or chilly and rainy, leaving you and your guests uncomfortable. If you are planning to have an outdoor wedding, be sure to have a backup plan just in case there’s bad weather on your big day.

Most outdoor venues will have indoor ceremony and reception halls in the event bad weather does strike on your wedding day. Before signing a contract, make sure you ask the venue staff if they have a backup plan. If they don’t, insist that you can move your ceremony indoors at the last minute if need be, and make sure it’s added to your contract.

Have props on standby

No one wants to be stuck in the rain, especially in autumn when the weather starts to get chilly and cold and flu season begins. In the event you do experience some bad weather for your outdoor wedding and don’t have the option to move the wedding indoors, make sure you have the following items on standby to offer your guests:

  • Umbrellas
  • Outdoor heaters
  • Hand fans (in the event of warm weather)
  • Bottled water

When you have the items above on hand for your guests, they’ll feel more comfortable no matter the weather. Not only do you want your guests to be content, but you’ll also want to prepare for yourself. Be sure to have the following items on standby for yourself, especially if you’re the groom/bride:

  • Clear umbrella (doesn’t cast a shadow for photos)
  • Back up shoes (no one wants to walk down the aisle in soggy shoes!)
