It’s the time of year when the scent of smoked meat and tangy sauce signal the final bite of competitive barbecue in Kansas City. Each October, seasoned barbecue masters from around the nation descend on the city to demonstrate their barbecue chops. This year, barbecue aficionados will have to wait in anticipation a few weeks longer than usual for the annual American Royal World Series of Barbecue.
World Series Opener
Slated for Oct. 26-30, the American Royal World Series of Barbecue will relocate to the Kansas Speedway after more than 30 years in the West Bottoms of Kansas City, Missouri, and last year’s relocation to Arrowhead Stadium at the Truman Sports Complex. With more than 600 teams expected to compete and an estimated 50,000+ expected attendees, the Speedway venue will provide ample space to take in the sights, sounds and smells of the event. This year’s later date for the competition will allow the American World Series of Barbecue to be the final event of the 2016 competitive barbecue season. Plus, there’s the chance late-October’s cooler temps could be the best way to further enhance the appetite for world-class barbecue.

In addition to an incredible selection of barbecue competitors, the five-day event offers other entertainment for the public such as the 91st annual American Royal Parade, Cowtown Family Fun Fest, Royal Tours and music from a number of regional and local bands. Tickets are available for purchase now or in-person at the ticketing gates starting at noon on Friday, Oct. 28 and 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29.
